Big River Steampunk Festival in Hannibal Missouri

Labor Day weekend 2016.

This was a really fun event with free entertainment from Beard & Bean, and some of your favorite musical acts, and some paid events, including Steamapalooza and the River Boat Time Travelers Ball.  Doc Phineas (Kenneth Kastler) is truly a Ray of Sunshine Steampunk Ambassador.  Hannibal has a lot of history and Main street still retains its charm.  You will NOT want to miss the Time Travelers Ball, which is a Riverboat cruise with live music (paid event).  You can bet I shook a tail feather to the tunes of the Steampunk Stompers.  A great time was had by all, and Doc knows how to start a Conga!   There are all sorts of vendors should you need a Steampunk outfit, they have you covered in more ways than one.   My twin and I and our new friend Beth were still in dance mode and went to a bar on Main Street playing good dance music which we appreciated more than the local regulars.

And my friend, Haute Hen, the Countess Victoria L. Szulc has written the 2nd book in her series, Revenge and Machinery, with protagonist Kate Church.  I am actually enjoying this book better than the first one Strax & the Widow. On page 100 currently. #Steampunk #Novel

For those of you Renaissance Faire fans who like the faires but not the travel, and want more of a home-town local flavor, you should check out The Central Missouri Renaissance Festival Oct 22-23, 2016.  Located near Kingdom City,  which is  East of Columbia,  there are plenty of entertainers: storytellers, musicians,  crafts, and garb, though usually no jousting if that is your thing.  I do recommend purchasing a bopper sword and lightweight shield from Oakheart Armory  https://www.facebook.com/oakheart.armory?fref=ts,  for your exercise.    I would advise bringing a cooler or picnic lunch, though, as there are not many nearby restaurants.   There are not any paved or gravel walkways, so keep that in mind to bring wheeled contraptions that can handle grass, and be prepared for ye olde Johnny on the Spot.   https://www.facebook.com/events/552448751590996/

For any bellydance and cosplay fans, you should really check out this event in St Louis:

Just in case you need some tips on St Louis Nightlife where you can dance.....

Club Viva http://www.clubvivastl.com/ for Latin Dancing- Son Montuno is very good :

http://www.hermansemidey.net/  Brass section , drums, and everyone top notch!  Happy dancers in the crowd, let me say!  And excellent singers- not that I'm biased or anything :)

Helens Fitzgeralds  http://helenfitzgeralds.com/for Rock&Roll and Dance Tunes.  One of the best Lightshows around, and an excellent DJ during Band breaks:

One of my favorites: Platinum Rock Legends.   http://platinumrocklegends.com/ Just go see them.  You're welcome. Thank the Maker, they can sing a hell of a lot better than most cover bands, -- so refreshing! And they dress like the artists.  I hear they have added Prince to their line-up.  Along with Def Leopard, Journey, you know, all the good stuff.   Most folks have no problem being motivated to shake their stuff on the dance floor.

August 2016 and beyond.....Upcoming events: Big River Festival, St Louis Renaissance Fair, Archon.

Here is a link to the Big River Steampunk Festival in Hannibal MO 2016, Labor Day weekend

This will be my first year attending this event, as the past two years have been spent at Dragoncon in Atlanta.  This year, in order to spend more time with family and avoid outrageous Big City Hotel prices,  I am sticking closer to home, and will room with Haute Hen, the Countess.  I plan to attend the Saturday late night paranormal discussions event with Doc Phineas (Kenneth Kastler).  The 'Ghost Tour' discusses local Hannibal History, a Graveyard tour, a Trolley Ride, and a mind-empowerment exercise.  I may use one of my alternate disguises for this event, as I think Agent Owl might cause some folks to faint if they meet me for the first time in the Graveyard.  I haven't decided yet.  Sunday, I will be in my usual mission gear as Agent Owl, and plan to fly about and see what I can see.    I have purchased my tickets for the Riverboat Cruise and Ball Sunday Night, but I am not certain if I will be more comfortable in my usual Agent gear, or will need something more fancy which I have created, just in case.   I hear the September Missouri heat and humidity can cause some misery, so it is possible I may purchase tickets to some more indoor events for Sunday.

Renaissance Faire Fans, the St Louis Renaissance Faire is held at Rotary Park, in Wentzville, MO. Weekends only: Sat/Sun: Sep 17th-Oct 16th , 2016. 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. (even when it rains).

Mark my words, Chuvani Bellydance is a joy to watch, and are not scared to change into Mermaids if the rain comes down.  There is a joust, plenty of fair food, a shaded Childrens area, practice areas to work on your archery/dagger/axe throwing skills, a scavenger hunt for the children, and craft stations on certain weekends.   Wildlife Command Center usually makes an appearance, allowing folks to hold their reptiles, see their birds of prey up close, and maybe even get a photo with BobaFette, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, for a donation.   There are plenty of artisans, from leather goods, to pottery, jewelry, blades, scented oils, armor, and faire garb.     There are more than three stages with entertainers from jester/acrobatic types, to pirates who sing, noble choirs, bawdy ballads, etc.   Crazy Boy McCoy is a fun entertainer/acrobat/juggler.    There are usually themed weekends, with contests for non-staff to participate in to display masks, costumes, and a facial hair competition for my pirate and Steampunk friends.   I do enjoy the singing and the dancing.  They also have a weekend with  ASL- Sign language interpreters at many of the stages.  The paths are primarily gravel, and are hard to push an umbrella stroller.  Off-roading strollers would be fine.  There is a bit of a slope to some areas and some stages, which are dangerous in the mud, should you not have steady feet or steady mechanical transportation.   Bathrooms are the 'Johnny on the Spot' type at the Faire, but the park does have some plumbed bathrooms, just NOT close to the Faire.  There are limited covered areas, so bring an umbrella or raingear if the weather threatens your enjoyment.  Expect to park on the grass.  Should you get lost, they do have costumed volunteers, who I have always found to be very helpful in answering questions.   The challenge is knowing who is staff and who is not, as MANY folk who are not staff like to attend in garb (myself included).

Here is a link to Archon's 2016 web page Sep 30-Oct 2nd

If you love Science Fiction and fantasy books, this is a convention that FEATURES authors.  They also have a Friday evening tea party, with cookies, and I am hosting a Steampunk Show & Tell at 8PM to meet other Steampunk Folk and share our art/costumery/gadgets/written work.     Saturday has the BEST professional Masquerade with Award winning costumers and cosplayers competing for ribbons and recognition, and skits designed to entertain with the feel of a real stage production.  Work with a professional stage crew who knows their stuff in regards to lighting, sound, and making a great show.   This convention tends to appeal to more mature con-goers (over 21) and Saturday night definitely has one of the wildest party nights at the hotel.  You can dance if you want to, or hang out in the courtyard and chat, or visit room parties on the first floor.
